An Awareness
At the celebrations for Vanuatu Independence 2017, Pastor Solo asked that I give an "awareness" speech to introduce myself and let villagers know about my work. Below is a transcript.

Hello, good morning, and thank you for the opportunity to speak today. I am sorry to take you away from your independence day celebrations and I promise this will only be a short speech.

My host family here, Jeffery and MIkale, have given me the name of Leimara. Thank you to my family for hosting me, and to the village of Talhoa for inviting me to work here. I am an American with the Peace Corps, and I arrived in Talhoa at the beginning of July, but I have been here in Vanuatu since April, training in both Pele and Epau.

I am working here at Eles school with Mr. Ben and Ms. Daniel. The first Peace Corps volunteer for this project in Talhoa was Ms. Shannon, who some of you may remember. Like Ms. Shannon, I will be here for two years of service.

These first three months I will be observing at Eles school to better understand the school system, the students and the teachers. After that, I will begin to work alongside various teachers to help them with classroom management, classroom activities, lesson plans, and the English literacy program. Another goal that the Peace Corps has for this program is introducing academic and American cultural resources into the school’s lesson plans.

The number one project while I’m here is the English literacy program. I am here to help the students with their reading and writing skills. This school has a great library filled with amazing books, and I want students to use them more for both school projects and for personal reading.

When I was a child, I would return from the library with a huge pile of books. The pile was so large that my family would ask me if the library had to close that day since I took all of their books. I want to instill that joy and excitement in reading in the students of Eles school and of Talhoa village.

However, I am just one person, and the teachers are just a few more. I want to tell all of you that it is important for everyone in this community to encourage children to read. Read to your children, if they don’t know how. With books, children learn about God. With books, children can learn about the history of their country and the story of its independence. With books, children can learn about animals and nature. With books, children can see parts of the world that they’ve never seen before. All of that starts with one simple thing, and that is learning how to read.
